Feedback from XRWD LGM

Feedback from XRWD local group meeting 9 February 2021

The main issue that we discussed was the CEE bill and how to support it. The political working group is talking to local councillors about how they can show their support for the bill and are involved in drafting a statement of support that councillors can sign. This will be sent out under the umbrella of Warwickshire Climate Alliance.

What's a 'Rebellion of One'?

Coming out of the pandemic will be our last, best chance to remake the world, and it’s being thrown away.

If one thing is clear, it’s that the government is not about to ‘build back better’ from Covid-19: their policies and budgets give them away. Clearly visible behind the coat of greenwash are the government’s real priorities: stay in power; bail out polluting industries; protect their own interests; and lie to us about it.

It’s terrifying.

We need to do something. In March, we will.

Global Newsletter #48

Citizens Assemble!

Dear rebels,

Without a massive mobilisation to address the climate crisis, our civilisation will collapse. That was the stark message delivered to policymakers this month in an article by an international team of scientists.

Policymakers also know, thanks to a UN global climate poll that surveyed over a million people in 50 countries, that two-thirds of humanity think we are in a global emergency and want action.

Yet the policies to pull us out of this emergency and save our civilisation are not materialising. Our politicians seem to be incapable or unwilling to heed the warnings of scientists and follow the will of the people. Our current political systems are failing us.

Warwickshire Climate Alliance Update

Warwickshire Climate Alliance was set up last year as an umbrella organisation bringing together local groups working on climate change and related issues. It has a website which lists local and national groups, to enable groups to find out about one another. www.warwickshireclimatealliance.org

It is currently running an art and writing competition for local schools, called ``A creative response to climate change". At Christmas it organised an online Climate Quiz in which 35 people took part, with, among others, the Mayor of Leamington and the head of Warwick District's drive for carbon neutrality as quizmasters. At the moment it is in the process of adopting concrete goals for local action in 2021. There are fortnightly Zoom meetings, on Monday evenings. The next meetings are on January 25th and February 8th. Everyone is welcome: contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for the link.

Uk Action Strategy Update

As we enter 2021, we know that faith in our Government is at an all time low and public understanding of the climate crisis is on the up...
It's time to start thinking about the window of possibility for XR as we emerge from a crazy difficult 2020 and build towards COP26 in November 2021.
Please check out XR’s latest Action Strategy at: https://xrb.link/Z2kH8rBB5O This details short term goals of our actions, as we wait for the overarching movement strategy to be released soon, and announces provisional details of the first waves of rebellion in Spring 2021, with lots of links to resources to fire up autonomous action across the UK! But please note the dates listed are all now subject to review and possible change in light of Covid Regulations, further information to be confirmed in due course.

Incredible Edible - Leamington Spa

Incredible Edible Leamington Spa is part of a global network of Incredible Edible gardens originally begun in Todmorden in 2008. The SPARKS - Incredible Edible project, facilitated by a host of wonderful individuals, currently maintains community gardens in Leamington, Warwick, and Kenilworth and is supporting further activity in, Napton, Bishop's Itchington, at a community orchard on Harbury Lane and as far away as Warrington and Amsterdam and has ambitious plans for expanding the project further.

Derrick Knight, who is a local XR rebel and a team of volunteers meet members of the community and identify suitable spaces in which they can develop community gardens aiming to: grow food and resilient communities, raise awareness of issues of food sustainability, improve knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating, provide food for people living locally and give mental health support through social subscribing partnerships.

The Law of the Land

When Extinction Rebellion first hit the world’s headlines, it was because we were willing to break the law to raise awareness about the climate crisis.

But last year saw a marked shift in climate activism’s relationship with the law. Across the globe communities and organisations have started to use existing laws, and even create new ones, to hold governments and polluting corporations to account.

We’ve seen young people all around the world, from Mexico to South Korea, sue their governments for negligent climate policy. We’ve seen Portugese youth activists have their landmark case against all 33 European states fast-tracked to the European Court of Human Rights. And we’ve seen a vast array of lawsuits brought against major oil firms by US states, cities, and communities.

The Climate and Ecological Emergency (CEE) Bill

The CEE Bill is steadily gaining momentum - 89 MPs have now given it their support, as well as several organisations - see MPs & Supporters - CEE Bill Alliance Several local Councils around the country have also passed motions supporting the Bill. Its second reading will be on 12th March.

Our area's two MPs have yet to declare their support for the Bill. We have gained some useful clarification of Matt Western's position from a fantastic climate charity Hope for the Future. Hope for the Future equips communities, groups and individuals with the necessary training and information to communicate with politicians about the climate emergency. It has confirmed to us that as Labour party policy is not to support the CEE Bill in its entirety, it is highly improbable that Matt, as an Opposition Whip, will be able to lend his explicit support for it. His job is to ensure that Labour MPs vote the way the party wants them to and he is bound by a commitment to remain loyal in public to the official party line on any issue.

HS2 – Let's End It

Urgent message from Chris Packham Stand For The Trees

Now, in the face of multiple emergencies - climate, environment, pandemic and economic - HS2 is a bankrupt idea beyond belief.

We need 100,000 signatures to trigger a debate in Parliament for a new vote on the future of HS2.
Act Now - Please click here to add your signature.

In 2021 we need brave leadership, prepared to make urgent, real-time decisions, to halt and reverse the damage we are doing to our natural world, right now. Not more pledges and targets beyond the term of our immediate government. Time is running out. We need action now.

Episode 1 – The Book Club

We are thrilled to begin with "The Great Derangement", which questions the cultural silence around the Climate & Ecological Emergency but also looks at issues of colonialism, and its modern day influence, on the Climate Crisis and beyond. It is a seminal work, though it is better known in the USA; published in 2015 before Extinction Rebellion and the Youth Strikes.
